This major rehabilitation project for the USACE-Kansas City District focused on the comprehensive mechanical and electrical overhaul of 18 Tainter gates and 18 sluice gates. Key machinery replacement included the full installation of new trunnion arms on all Tainter gates, requiring extensive, fracture critical field and shop welding in accordance with AWS D1.5. The operating mechanisms received substantial upgrades, with the replacement of limit switches, motors, brakes, and lifting chains, followed by the precise realignment of all operating machinery. Simultaneously, a complete electrical overhaul was performed, including the replacement of the dam's main control panel, all feeders, branch circuit wiring, and the installation of new NEMA 4X control panels and rotating cam limit switches at each Tainter gate. Furthermore, the project involved the rehabilitation of the sluice gates, including field-machining and cladding, and the development and installation of a specialized dewatering system and access platform to facilitate extensive steel repairs and full blast and paint of all gates.
