Sill Beam Installation, Cast in Place Concrete, Slot Removal and Installation, Underwater Surveying, Underwater Concrete

This project focused on two main items: installing bulkhead recesses in the lock walls and setting sill blocks on the lock floor. To install the four recesses, OCCI utilized temporary cofferdams, fabricating custom bottoms to fit the lock's unique sill geometry, which allowed for the dewatering of localized work areas while maintaining overnight river traffic. OCCI then employed wire sawing to remove existing concrete and, after surface preparation, placed concrete in the tall 60-foot slots in a single pour, including the installation of rebar and fabricated recess components. For the sill blocks, OCCI innovatively switched from steel, stay-in-place forms and diver-finished concrete to utilizing precast units set underwater by divers and filled with concrete, ensuring the critical stainless steel bearing plates were placed within the strict 3/16" tolerance.
