Boone High Double-Track Bridge Construction

OCCI, Inc. constructed a new double-track bridge, 2550′ long and 180′ above the Des Moines River in Boone, Iowa adjacent to existing Kate Shelly Bridge, located only 90′ away. The new bridge more adequately accommodates the heavier loads and faster travel (70 mph) of today’s railroad industry. The original bridge was completed in 1901, and had a speed limitation of 20 mph.

The materials encompassed into the bridge construction include:

  • 23,350 cubic yards of concrete
  • 1,660 tons of reinforcing steel
  • 275,700 cubic yards of earthwork
  • 56 drilled shaft (8’ & 9’ diameter) 75’ deep
  • 600 prestressed, precast deck panels 12
  • 70’ steel spans (42 tons ea.)
  • 40 100’ steel spans (93 tons ea.)
